A Lap Joint Flange (LJF) is a two-component piping assembly used to connect two pipe sections. It is unique among flange types because the flange ring itself is not welded to the pipe, offering a significant advantage for alignment.

Key Components
The Lap Joint Flange assembly consists of two main parts:

Stub End: This is a short piece of pipe (or a fitting) with a flared or “lapped” end and a weld bevel on the other. The stub end is butt-welded directly to the pipe. This component is the only part that comes into contact with the process fluid and forms the gasket sealing face.

Note: Stub Ends are classified as pipe fittings and their dimensions are typically covered by ASME B16.9.

Lap Joint Flange (Ring Flange): This is a loose, ring-shaped flange that slips over the pipe and the stub end. It has standard bolt-hole dimensions but lacks a raised face, featuring a flat face and a radius at the bore to accommodate the stub end.

Advantages and Uses
The unique design of the Lap Joint Flange system provides several key benefits:

Easy Alignment: The flange ring can freely rotate around the stub end after the stub end is welded to the pipe. This makes aligning the bolt holes with the mating flange extremely easy, which is beneficial in complex or large-diameter piping systems where alignment can be tricky.

Cost-Effectiveness in Corrosive Systems: Since the flange ring does not contact the process fluid (only the stub end does), the ring flange can be made from a cheaper, less corrosive-resistant material (like carbon steel). The more expensive, corrosion-resistant material (like stainless steel) is only needed for the stub end, leading to cost savings overall.

Ease of Maintenance: The assembly is ideal for systems that require frequent disassembly for inspection, cleaning, or modification, such as those found in the chemical, food and beverage, and pharmaceutical industries.

Reusability: The flange ring can often be salvaged and reused if the piping system needs to be replaced due to erosion or corrosion, as the flange ring itself remains undamaged.
